Insulin Dosage Calculator

The Insulin Dosage Calculator helps users determine the appropriate insulin dose needed by calculating correction and meal doses based on blood glucose levels, carbohydrate intake, and physical activity plans.

How to Use the Insulin Dosage Calculator

This guide will walk you through the steps to use the Insulin Dosage Calculator effectively.

Step 1: Enter Your Current Blood Glucose Level

Locate the input field labeled Current Blood Glucose Level (mg/dL). Enter your current blood glucose level in this field. Ensure the value is within the range of 0 to 1000 mg/dL, as values outside this range are not valid.

Step 2: Enter Your Target Blood Glucose Level

Next, find the input field labeled Target Blood Glucose Level (mg/dL). Input your target blood glucose level, which should be between 70 and 180 mg/dL. This target level helps the calculator determine the necessary insulin correction dose.

Step 3: Provide Your Carbohydrate Intake

In the field labeled Carbohydrates to be Consumed (grams), enter the amount of carbohydrates you plan to consume. The valid range for carb intake is from 0 to 300 grams.

Step 4: Specify Your Insulin Sensitivity Factor

Find the input labeled Insulin Sensitivity Factor (mg/dL per unit) and enter your insulin sensitivity factor. This value should be between 1 and 150 mg/dL per unit. This factor is critical in calculating the correction dose.

Step 5: Enter Your Carb to Insulin Ratio

Enter your carb to insulin ratio in the field labeled Carb to Insulin Ratio (grams per unit). This value must be between 1 and 50 grams per unit. It helps in determining the meal dose of insulin.

Step 6: Select Your Physical Activity Level

Use the dropdown menu labeled Physical Activity Level to select your planned physical activity level. Choose from the following options:

  • No exercise planned – 1.0
  • Light exercise planned – 0.9
  • Moderate exercise planned – 0.8
  • Intense exercise planned – 0.7

The activity level influences the total insulin dose.

Step 7: Calculate Your Insulin Doses

Once all fields are filled correctly, the calculator will provide you with the appropriate insulin doses:

  • Correction Dose: Calculated using the formula (current blood glucose level – target blood glucose level) / insulin sensitivity factor. The result will be displayed in units.
  • Meal Dose: Calculated using the formula (carbohydrates to be consumed / carb to insulin ratio). The result will be displayed in units.
  • Total Insulin Dose: The sum of correction dose and meal dose, adjusted by the physical activity level factor. The result will finalize your total dose in units.

Ensure to verify each dose with your healthcare provider’s guidance or using your prescribed diabetes management plan.
