How to Use the Composition Calculator
The Composition Calculator is a tool designed to help you analyze and plan compositions by calculating important aspects of a given rectangular dimension. Follow the steps below to effectively use the calculator and maximize its potential.
Step 1: Input Dimensions
Begin by entering the dimensions of the rectangle you wish to analyze. You will need to provide the following:
- Width (cm): Enter the width of the rectangle in centimeters. Note that the width must be a number between 0.1 and 1000 cm.
- Height (cm): Enter the height of the rectangle in centimeters. Similar to the width, the height should be a value between 0.1 and 1000 cm.
Step 2: Choose the Orientation
Select the desired orientation of the rectangle from the drop-down menu:
- Landscape: Choose this option if the width is greater than the height.
- Portrait: Select this if the height is greater than the width.
Step 3: Select Rule of Thirds
The Rule of Thirds is a principle in composition that divides an image into thirds. Choose one from the available options:
- Horizontal: Apply horizontal third lines only.
- Vertical: Apply vertical third lines only.
- Both: Apply both horizontal and vertical third lines.
Step 4: Review Calculation Results
After entering the inputs, the calculator provides the following calculated results:
- Aspect Ratio: This is the ratio of width to height, formatted to two decimal places.
- Golden Ratio Match (%): This percentage indicates how close the aspect ratio is to the golden ratio (approximately 1.618), expressed with one decimal precision.
- Horizontal Third Lines (cm): Indicates the horizontal lines dividing the height into thirds, presented with one decimal precision and measured in centimeters.
- Vertical Third Lines (cm): Shows the vertical lines dividing the width into thirds, displayed with one decimal precision and measured in centimeters.
- Diagonal Length: The length of the diagonal line across the rectangle, calculated using the Pythagorean theorem. This is output in centimeters with one decimal precision.
- Total Area (cm²): The calculated area of the rectangle in square centimeters, provided to two decimal places.
By following these steps, you can utilize the Composition Calculator to effectively analyze and plan your compositions, making your creative process more informed and precise.
