Mdrd Calculator

The MDRD Calculator estimates the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) based on serum creatinine levels, age, gender, and race, and determines the corresponding Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) stage.

How to Use the MDRD Calculator

The MDRD (Modification of Diet in Renal Disease) Calculator is a tool designed to estimate the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), which is an important indicator of kidney function. Follow the steps below to effectively use the calculator.

Step 1: Input Serum Creatinine

  • Locate the field labeled Serum Creatinine (mg/dL).
  • Enter the serum creatinine level in the designated field. Ensure that the value is between 0.1 and 20 mg/dL, with increments of 0.1 mg/dL.
  • This field is required, so make sure it is filled out before you proceed.

Step 2: Input Age

  • Find the field labeled Age (years).
  • Input the patient’s age, which must be a number between 18 and 120 years. The calculator only accepts whole numbers (step of 1 year).
  • Ensure this required field is completed accurately.

Step 3: Select Gender

  • Go to the dropdown menu labeled Gender.
  • Select the appropriate option:
    • Male (Value: 1)
    • Female (Value: 0.742)
  • This selection is mandatory for the GFR calculation.

Step 4: Select Race

  • Identify the field labeled Race.
  • Select one of the options given:
    • Non-Black (Value: 1)
    • Black (Value: 1.212)
  • This is a required field and influences the GFR calculation.

Step 5: Review and Calculate

  • Confirm that all the required fields have been appropriately filled — serum creatinine, age, gender, and race.
  • Proceed to calculate the GFR by using the values entered.

Understanding the Results

Upon completion of the above steps, the calculator will provide two main results:

  • Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR): This will be displayed as a two-decimal number, formatted with mL/min/1.73m². This value is crucial for evaluating kidney function.
  • CKD Stage: The Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) stage will be shown. Stages are determined as follows:
    • Stage 1: GFR ≥ 90
    • Stage 2: 60 ≤ GFR < 90
    • Stage 3: 30 ≤ GFR < 60
    • Stage 4: 15 ≤ GFR < 30
    • Stage 5: GFR < 15

This guide should aid you in thoroughly understanding and accurately using the MDRD Calculator to assess kidney function.
