Square Footage Calculator: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Input Room Dimensions

To begin using the Square Footage Calculator, first identify the type of room you are measuring. If it is a regular room, you will only need the length and width. For an L-shaped room, additional measurements will be required.

  • Room Length (feet): Enter the length of the room in feet into the “Room Length” field. Make sure the value is between 0.1 and 1000 feet.
  • Room Width (feet): Enter the width of the room in feet into the “Room Width” field. Ensure that this value also falls within the range of 0.1 to 1000 feet.

Step 2: Select the Room Type

Use the dropdown menu to specify whether the room is a “Regular Room” or an “Irregular Room (L-shaped)”. This selection will affect which input fields and calculations are necessary for accurate results.

Step 3: Input Additional Dimensions (For L-shaped Rooms)

If your room type is “Irregular Room (L-shaped)”, additional measurements are necessary:

  • Additional Length (feet): Enter the additional length of the L-shaped section in feet, if applicable. The value should be between 0 and 1000 feet.
  • Additional Width (feet): Enter the additional width for the L-shaped portion, making sure it is between 0 and 1000 feet.

Step 4: Review Calculated Results

After entering all required dimensions, the calculator will automatically compute the following results:

  • Total Square Footage: The calculator determines the area of the room based on your input. For regular rooms, it multiplies length by width; for L-shaped rooms, it adds the area of the additional section.
  • Room Perimeter: This value represents the total boundary length of the room. It includes the perimeter of the additional section for L-shaped rooms.
  • Estimated Carpet Cost ($25/sq ft): The calculator provides a total cost estimate if you choose to carpet the room, based on the cost per square foot.
  • Estimated Paint Cost ($2/sq ft of wall area): This amount is based on the perimeter and provides a cost for painting the walls if they are 8 feet high.
