How to Use the Glycemic Index Calculator

This Glycemic Index Calculator helps you to determine the glycemic index, glycemic load, glycemic impact level, and net carbohydrates of various foods based on their carbohydrate, sugar, and fiber content. Follow the steps below to use the calculator effectively.

Step 1: Select Food Category

  • Start by selecting the category of food you are analyzing from the provided options.
  • Available categories include Breads & Grains, Fruits, Vegetables, Dairy Products, and Legumes.
  • This step is required to proceed with the calculations.

Step 2: Enter Carbohydrates per Serving

  • Enter the amount of carbohydrates per serving in grams in the designated field.
  • Ensure the value is between 0 and 300 grams with increments of 0.1 grams as needed.
  • This value is mandatory for the calculations.

Step 3: Enter Sugar Content

  • Input the sugar content per serving in grams.
  • The value should be between 0 and 100 grams, adjustable in 0.1-gram increments.
  • This information is necessary to proceed.

Step 4: Enter Fiber Content

  • Specify the fiber content per serving in grams.
  • Valid entries range from 0 to 50 grams, with steps of 0.1 grams.
  • Fiber content is required to complete the calculations.

Step 5: Enter Portion Size

  • Provide the portion size of the food item in grams.
  • The valid range is from 1 to 1000 grams, and this field only accepts whole numbers.
  • This field is necessary to accurately calculate the results.

Step 6: Review Results

Once all required fields are filled, the calculator will automatically compute the following results:

  • Glycemic Index: This value will be displayed based on the formula: (70 * (carbAmount – fiberAmount) / 100) + (30 * sugarAmount / carbAmount). The glycemic index indicates how quickly the food will raise blood glucose levels.
  • Glycemic Load: Calculated as (glycemicIndex * (carbAmount – fiberAmount)) / 100, it provides an assessment of the food’s total glycemic impact on blood sugar levels.
  • Glycemic Impact Level: Categorized as ‘Low’ if the glycemic index is ≤ 55, ‘Medium’ if between 56 and 69, and ‘High’ for values ≥ 70.
  • Net Carbohydrates: This is found using carbAmount – fiberAmount and is presented in grams with up to one decimal place.

By following these steps, you can make informed decisions about food choices and understand their impact on your glycemic levels. Adjust your input based on dietary needs and consult with a healthcare provider if you have specific concerns.
