How to Use the Federal Retirement Calculator
The Federal Retirement Calculator is designed to help you understand your potential retirement benefits under different federal retirement systems. Follow these steps to input your data and calculate your estimated retirement benefit amounts.
Step 1: Enter Personal Information
- Date of Birth: Input your birth date. This is a required field limited to dates on or before December 31, 2005.
Step 2: Enter Service Information
- Service Start Date: Enter the date you began your federal service. This date is required and must be on or before December 31, 2024.
- Planned Retirement Date: Input the date you plan to retire. This is a required field, and the date must be on or after January 1, 2024.
Step 3: Select Retirement System
- Retirement System: Choose between FERS (Federal Employees Retirement System) and CSRS (Civil Service Retirement System). This is a required field.
Step 4: Enter Financial Information
- High-3 Average Salary: Provide your highest average salary over any three consecutive years. Enter a value between $1,000 and $1,000,000. This field is required.
Step 5: Enter Additional Service Credit
- Accumulated Sick Leave Hours: Input your accumulated sick leave hours, which will be converted into service credit. This required field must be at least 0.
- Military Service Years: If applicable, enter the years of military service that can be credited. This is an optional field with a range of 0 to 50 years.
Step 6: Calculate Results
After providing all the required inputs, the calculator will automatically compute the following results:
- Total Years of Service: This includes your federal service years plus a conversion of sick leave hours into service years.
- Retirement Age: The calculator determines your age at the planned retirement date.
- Pension Percentage: This percentage indicates the portion of your High-3 Average Salary you can expect as a pension.
- Annual Pension Amount: The yearly pension you can expect based on your years of service and high-3 average salary.
- Monthly Pension Amount: The monthly pension derived from dividing the annual pension by 12.
- Sick Leave Service Credit: Time added to your service years from converted sick leave hours.
- Retirement Eligibility Status: Indicates whether or not you meet the age and service requirements for retirement eligibility. This will output as “Eligible” or “Not Yet Eligible”.
