Using the Horse Cost Calculator

The Horse Cost Calculator is designed to help you estimate the expenses associated with owning a horse. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to use this calculator effectively.

Step 1: Enter Horse Purchase Price

Begin by entering the initial cost of purchasing the horse. Locate the field labeled Horse Purchase Price and enter the amount. Make sure the value is between 0 and 1,000,000, as this is a mandatory field.

Step 2: Input Horse Age

In the next step, provide the age of the horse in years. Click on the input field labeled Horse Age (years) and enter a number between 0 and 40. This information will help in calculating various age-dependent factors. This field is required.

Step 3: Select Boarding Type

Select the type of boarding you prefer for your horse. There are three options to choose from:

  • Full Board – $1200
  • Partial Board – $800
  • Self Care – $400

Choose the option that best fits your needs. This is a required selection.

Step 4: Specify Horse Activity Level

Indicate the horse’s activity level by selecting one of the following options:

  • Light Work (1-3 times/week) – $300
  • Moderate Work (3-5 times/week) – $450
  • Heavy Work (5-7 times/week) – $600

Choose based on how frequently the horse will be active. This choice is mandatory.

Step 5: Determine Shoeing Requirements

Identify the shoeing needs of your horse by selecting from:

  • Barefoot – $0
  • Front Shoes Only – $120
  • Full Set – $240

This selection will influence the monthly shoeing costs and is required input.

Step 6: Enter Insurance Rate

Provide the insurance rate as a percentage for your horse. This is an essential step to calculate monthly insurance costs. Enter a value between 0 and 100, in increments of 0.1, in the Insurance Rate (%) field.

Calculating Costs

After filling in all the required fields, the calculator computes the following costs:

  • Monthly Boarding Cost: Based on your boarding type selection.
  • Monthly Feed & Supplements: Determined by the horse’s activity level.
  • Monthly Shoeing Cost: Calculated based on shoeing requirements, averaged over six months.
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: Calculated by applying the insurance rate to the purchase price and dividing by 12.
  • Monthly Veterinary Cost: A fixed cost of $150.
  • Total Monthly Cost: The sum of all monthly expenses.
  • Total Annual Cost: The total monthly cost multiplied by 12.

By following these steps, you will receive a comprehensive estimate of both the monthly and annual costs associated with horse ownership, tailored to your specific choices and needs.
