Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Chi-Square Calculator
Step 1: Input Observed Value
Begin by entering the observed value in the provided field. Ensure that this value is a number equal to or greater than zero, as it is a mandatory requirement for the calculation.
Step 2: Input Expected Value
Next, fill in the expected value. Like the observed value, this should also be a number that is zero or more. The expected value, along with the observed value, will be used to calculate the Chi-Square statistic.
Step 3: Input Degrees of Freedom
Enter the degrees of freedom for your dataset. This is a required field and must be a whole number with a minimum value of one. The degrees of freedom influence the distribution, which is crucial for the p-value calculation.
Step 4: Select Significance Level
Select the significance level from the drop-down menu. You have three options: 0.10 (90% confidence), 0.05 (95% confidence), and 0.01 (99% confidence). This choice affects the p-value threshold for determining statistical significance.
Step 5: Reviewing Calculated Results
- Chi-Square Value: Once you’ve entered all inputs, the calculator will compute the Chi-Square value using the formula: (Observed Value – Expected Value)2 / Expected Value. This value will be displayed up to four decimal places.
- P-Value: The p-value is calculated by evaluating 1 minus the cumulative distribution function of the Chi-Square value with specified degrees of freedom. This will also be shown with four decimal places.
- Statistical Significance: Finally, the calculator will indicate whether the results are statistically significant by comparing the p-value with the selected significance level. If the p-value is less than the significance level, the result is deemed “Significant,” otherwise “Not Significant.”
