Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Medical Dose Calculator
This guide will walk you through the process of using the Medical Dose Calculator to determine the appropriate medication dosage based on several input factors. Follow each step carefully to ensure accurate results.
Step 1: Enter Patient Information
-
Patient Weight:
Locate the input field labeled “Patient Weight (kg)”. Enter the patient’s weight in kilograms. Ensure the weight is between 0.1 kg and 500 kg, as per the validation rules.
-
Patient Age:
Find the “Patient Age (years)” field and input the patient’s age in years. The valid range for age is from 0 to 120 years.
Step 2: Select Medication and Renal Function
-
Medication Type:
Choose the appropriate medication type from the dropdown menu. Options include “Standard Dose”, “Reduced Dose”, or “Enhanced Dose”. Each selection corresponds to a multiplying factor of 1, 0.5, or 1.5, respectively.
-
Renal Function:
Select the renal function of the patient using the provided options. The options include “Normal (>90 mL/min)”, “Mild Impairment (60-89 mL/min)”, “Moderate Impairment (30-59 mL/min)”, and “Severe Impairment (<30 mL/min)". Each corresponds to a factor of 1, 0.75, 0.5, or 0.25, respectively.
Step 3: Input Baseline Dose
Enter the baseline dose for the medication in the “Baseline Dose (mg)” field. Ensure the dose is between 0.1 mg and 1000 mg to meet the validation criteria.
Step 4: Review Calculated Results
-
Weight-Based Dose:
The calculator uses this formula:
baselineDose * (patientWeight / 70)
. The result will be displayed, formatted as a number with two decimal places and suffixed with “mg”. -
Adjusted Dose:
The formula used is:
weightBasedDose * medicationType * renalFunction
. This adjusted dose will also display with appropriate formatting. -
Total Daily Dose:
This is calculated using:
adjustedDose * 3
. It represents the dose for the entire day and is formatted as a number with two decimals and “mg/day” suffix. -
Dose per Kilogram:
The formula is:
adjustedDose / patientWeight
. This result indicates the dose per kilogram and is formatted accordingly.
