This guide will walk you through the steps to effectively utilize the Bike Power and Energy Calculator for determining the power requirements and energy expenditure during cycling.
Step 1: Enter Basic Data
- Rider Weight (kg): Start by inputting your weight. Ensure that the value is between 30 kg and 200 kg. You can use increments of 0.1 kg for more precise measurements.
- Bike Weight (kg): Enter the weight of your bike, which should be between 5 kg and 30 kg. Adjust the value in steps of 0.1 kg as needed.
Step 2: Input Cycling Conditions
- Speed (km/h): Specify your cycling speed. The acceptable range is between 1 km/h and 100 km/h, with increments of 0.1 km/h.
- Road Grade (%): Provide the road grade as a percentage. It can be any value from -45% (a downhill slope) to 45% (an uphill slope), with 0.1% increments.
- Headwind (km/h): Indicate the headwind speed you are facing. Enter a value between 0 km/h and 100 km/h, in steps of 0.1 km/h.
- Temperature (°C): Input the ambient temperature where you are cycling. It should be within the range of -20°C to 50°C, with a precision of 0.1°C.
Step 3: Select Riding Position
- Riding Position: Choose your riding position from the options available: Upright, Drops, or Aero. Each position affects the air resistance you will encounter.
Step 4: View the Results
After entering all the required fields, the calculator will provide you with several results:
- Total Mass: This value is a simple addition of the rider’s weight and the bike’s weight. It will be displayed in kilograms with one decimal point precision.
- Rolling Resistance Power: The power needed to overcome rolling resistance, displayed in watts.
- Gravity Power: The power required to counteract the gravitational force due to road grade, shown in watts.
- Air Resistance Power: The power needed to overcome air resistance, which is affected by speed, headwind, and riding position, expressed in watts.
- Total Power Required: Sum of all power components needed to maintain the input speed, measured in watts.
- Calories Burned Per Hour: An estimate of the calories you’ll burn per hour at the specified conditions, shown as kcal/hour.
