How to Use the Energy Usage Calculator

Welcome to the Energy Usage Calculator guide. This tool helps you estimate your energy usage and costs based on various household parameters. Follow the steps below to input your details and obtain your energy usage results.

Step 1: Enter Household Information

Begin by filling out the following input fields:

  • Number of People in Household: Enter the number of residents living in your household. The number must be between 1 and 20.
  • Home Size (square meters): Specify the size of your home in square meters. The value should be between 10 and 1000.

Step 2: Select Building Characteristics

Provide information about your home’s building type and insulation level:

  • Building Type: Choose from the following options:

    • Apartment (Multiplier: 1.2)
    • Townhouse (Multiplier: 1.4)
    • Single Family Home (Multiplier: 1.6)
  • Insulation Level: Indicate the level of insulation in your home:

    • Poor (Multiplier: 1.3)
    • Average (Multiplier: 1.0)

Step 3: Specify Electricity Rate

Input your electricity rate per kWh. This rate should be between $0.01 and $1.00. Ensure the rate is accurate to get a precise cost estimation.

Step 4: View Your Results

Once all fields are completed, the calculator will generate the following results:

  • Base Energy Usage (kWh/month): Calculated using the formula: homeSize * 0.12 * buildingType * insulationLevel.
  • Additional Usage from Occupants (kWh/month): This is calculated as householdSize * 75.
  • Total Monthly Energy Usage: Sum of base energy usage and occupant usage.
  • Estimated Monthly Cost: Calculated with the formula: totalMonthlyUsage * electricityRate.
  • Estimated Annual Cost: Monthly cost multiplied by 12.
  • Monthly Carbon Footprint (kg CO₂): Calculated as totalMonthlyUsage * 0.4.

The results provide a clear overview of your monthly and annual energy usage, costs, and carbon footprint based on your household settings.
