How to Use the Freight Class Calculator

This guide will help you understand how to use the Freight Class Calculator effectively. Follow these steps to determine the freight class, base rate, and adjusted rate per mile for your shipment.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Information

Begin by collecting all required data about your shipment. You will need to know the following:

  • Density: The density of your shipment in pounds per cubic foot. Ensure the value you enter is between 1 and 50.
  • Freight Type: Identify the type of freight. Options include Standard Freight, Fragile Items, and Hazardous Materials.
  • Dimensions: Measure the length, width, and height of the shipment in inches.
  • Weight: Determine the weight of the shipment in pounds.

Step 2: Input the Data into the Calculator

Using the gathered information, enter the following data into the respective fields of the Freight Class Calculator:

  1. Enter the Density in the “Density (pounds per cubic foot)” field.
  2. Select the appropriate Freight Type from the drop-down menu.
  3. Input the dimensions of the shipment by providing the Length, Width, and Height.
  4. Enter the Weight of your shipment.

Step 3: Understand the Results

After entering all necessary information, the calculator will compute several important values:

  • Cubic Feet: This value is calculated as (length * width * height) / 1728, providing the total volume in cubic feet.
  • Calculated Density: Determines the shipment’s density in lbs/ft³ found by dividing the weight by the cubic feet.
  • Freight Class: Based on the calculated density, this value indicates the freight class, ranging from 50 to 400, with lower numbers indicating denser shipments.
  • Base Rate per Mile: Displays the shipping rate per mile, adjusted according to the freight class.
  • Adjusted Rate per Mile: Shows the final shipping rate per mile, considering special conditions like fragile or hazardous items.

Each value will be presented in a comprehensible format, with applicable units indicated for clarity.

Step 4: Utilize the Results

With the calculated freight class and rates, you can now better plan and budget for the shipping costs of your freight. Use this information to compare shipping options and optimize your logistics strategy.

In case of any discrepancies or if you need further consultation, ensure all input values are correct and align with standard measurement practices.
