How to Use the Intercept Calculator
Welcome to the Intercept Calculator! This tool is designed to help you determine the slope, y-intercept, x-intercept, equation of a line, and the angle with the x-axis using two points on a cartesian plane. Follow the steps below to make full use of this calculator.
Step 1: Enter the Coordinates of the First Point
- X₁ Coordinate: Enter the x-coordinate value for the first point in the designated field labeled “X₁ Coordinate”. This input is required, so ensure that you provide a valid number.
- Y₁ Coordinate: Enter the y-coordinate value for the first point in the field labeled “Y₁ Coordinate”. Like the x-coordinate, this field must be filled with a valid numeric value.
Step 2: Enter the Coordinates of the Second Point
- X₂ Coordinate: Enter the x-coordinate value for the second point where it asks for “X₂ Coordinate”. This is another required input field, so make sure the data is correct.
- Y₂ Coordinate: Enter the y-coordinate value for the second point in the “Y₂ Coordinate” field. Ensure this field is filled out to proceed with calculations.
Step 3: Calculate and Interpret Results
Once you have entered all the required coordinates for both points, the calculator will automatically process the information and provide you with the following results:
- Slope (m): The calculator will compute the slope using the formula
(Y₂ - Y₁) / (X₂ - X₁)
. The result will be displayed with four decimal places. - Y-Intercept (b): Using the slope computed earlier, the y-intercept is determined by
Y₁ - (slope * X₁)
and shown with four decimal precision. - X-Intercept: This is calculated by the expression
-yIntercept / slope
and will also be rounded to four decimal places. - Line Equation: The equation of the line derived from the two points is given in the form “y = mx + b”. The slope and y-intercept will be substituted into this equation.
- Angle with X-axis (degrees): The calculator will determine the angle the line makes with the x-axis using the formula
atan(slope) * 180 / π
. The result is given in degrees and rounded to two decimal places.
By following these steps, you can efficiently use the intercept calculator to analyze the line defined by your given points. Ensure that all inputs are filled correctly to achieve accurate results.
