How to Use the Priming Sugar Calculator

The Priming Sugar Calculator is designed to help homebrewers determine the correct amount of priming sugar needed to carbonate their beer to the desired level. Follow these steps to use the calculator effectively:

Step 1: Input Batch Volume

Start by entering the Batch Volume of your beer in liters. This is the total volume of your beer that you plan to carbonate. Ensure that the number is between 1 and 1000, and you can enter it with one decimal precision.

Step 2: Enter the Current Beer Temperature

Input the Current Beer Temperature in degrees Celsius. This value is crucial as it affects the CO₂ already present in your beer. The acceptable temperature range is from 0 °C to 30 °C, and you can also enter the value with one decimal precision.

Step 3: Specify the Target CO₂ Volume

Determine your desired level of carbonation. Enter this as the Target CO₂ Volume. The calculator supports a range between 1.5 and 4.5 volumes of CO₂. Like the previous inputs, you may enter this value with one decimal precision.

Step 4: Select the Priming Sugar Type

Select the type of sugar you want to use from the Priming Sugar Type dropdown menu. The calculator offers several options:

  • Table Sugar (Sucrose)
  • Corn Sugar (Dextrose)
  • Dry Malt Extract (DME)
  • Brown Sugar

Each type of sugar has a different level of fermentability that affects the amount needed.

Step 5: Review the Results

After entering all necessary data, review the calculated results:

  • Dissolved CO₂ at Current Temperature: This is the volume of CO₂ already present in your beer, based on the temperature.
  • Additional CO₂ Required: This value shows how much more CO₂ is needed to reach your target volume.
  • Required Sugar Amount: This is the total amount of sugar you need to add, displayed in grams.
  • Sugar per 330ml Bottle: This calculation provides the amount of sugar needed per 330ml bottle, helping with accurate bottling.

Use these results to ensure your beer is perfectly carbonated to your liking!
