Using the Restaurant Tip Calculator

The Restaurant Tip Calculator is designed to help you quickly and accurately calculate the tip and total amount to be paid at a restaurant, while also providing you with options to split the bill among multiple people. Follow these steps to use the calculator effectively:

Step 1: Enter the Bill Amount

Begin by entering the total bill amount into the calculator. Look for the input field labeled Bill Amount. Enter the monetary value of your bill in this field, ensuring it is a positive number greater than $0.01, with increments as small as $0.01 allowed. Use this field to reflect the amount specified on your restaurant receipt or invoice.

Step 2: Select Service Quality

Next, you need to select the quality of service you experienced, as this will determine the tip percentage. Find the dropdown menu labeled Service Quality. Here, you can choose from several options such as:

  • Poor (10%)
  • Fair (15%)
  • Good (18%)
  • Great (20%)
  • Excellent (25%)

Select the option that best matches your experience. This selection directly impacts the tip percentage that will be applied to your bill.

Step 3: Split the Bill

If you plan to share the cost of the meal with others, you can specify how many people you are splitting the bill with. Find the input field labeled Split Between (# of People) and enter the number of people sharing the bill. This number must be at least 1 and no more than 100. Ensure the value entered is valid, as it determines the calculated per-person amount.

Understanding the Calculation Results

  • Tip Amount: This field shows the calculated tip based on the selected service quality percentage and the entered bill amount. The calculator formats it to USD currency with two decimal places.
  • Total Bill (with Tip): Displays the total amount payable including the tip. It is the sum of the bill amount and the calculated tip.
  • Amount Per Person: Shows how much each person needs to pay when the total is split among the specified number of people. It divides the Total Bill (with Tip) by the number of people sharing the bill.
  • Tip Percentage: Displays the tip percentage as a percentage value for reference, clearly indicating the portion of the bill designated as a tip.
