Using the Semester Calculator

This guide will walk you through using the Semester Calculator to determine important semester dates and metrics. Follow the steps below to input your data correctly and get the results you need.

Step 1: Input the Semester Start Date

Locate the Semester Start Date field. Select a date for the start of your semester by using the date picker. Ensure the date is between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2030, as specified by the validation rules.

Step 2: Enter the Number of Weeks in the Semester

In the field labeled Number of Weeks in Semester, input the total number of weeks your semester will last. The value must be a whole number between 1 and 52. This number represents the academic weeks, excluding holidays and breaks.

Step 3: Enter the Number of Holiday Days

Next, enter how many days of holidays are planned during the semester in the Number of Holiday Days field. You can input any whole number from 0 to 30. These days will be subtracted from the total to calculate effective study days.

Step 4: Choose the Semester Break Type

In the Semester Break Type dropdown menu, select the length of any additional breaks within the semester. Options are:

  • No Break
  • One Week
  • Two Weeks

This choice will add zero, one, or two weeks to the end of your semester as a break period.

Step 5: Review Results

Once you’ve completed all input fields, the calculator will display the results. These will include:

  • Semester End Date: The calculator will automatically add the total number of weeks and breaks to the start date to calculate the end date.
  • Total Days in Semester: This indicates the total number of days in the semester including breaks.
  • Effective Study Days: The number of days available for studying, excluding holidays.
  • Effective Study Weeks: The total effective study days divided by seven to convert them into weeks.

Ensure all inputs are correct to receive accurate calculations. Adjust any values as necessary if your circumstances change.

Note on Calculation Logic

The calculations rely on the following logic:

  • Semester End Date: Start Date + (Weeks * 7) + Break Length
  • Total Days: (Weeks * 7) + Break Length
  • Effective Study Days: Total Days – Holiday Days
  • Effective Study Weeks: Effective Study Days / 7
