How to Use the Silver Melt Calculator

The Silver Melt Calculator is a tool designed to help you determine the melt value of silver based on its weight, purity, and current market price. Follow this step-by-step guide to use the calculator effectively and obtain accurate results.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Enter Silver Weight

Begin by entering the weight of the silver item you are evaluating. Locate the Silver Weight input field and input the weight as a number. Ensure that the weight value is greater than 0.01. This field is mandatory.

Step 2: Select Weight Unit

Choose the unit of weight you have used for the silver. In the Weight Unit dropdown menu, select from one of the following options:

  • Grams
  • Troy Ounces
  • Ounces

Choosing the correct unit is essential for accurate calculation. This selection is required.

Step 3: Select Silver Purity

Next, select the purity of the silver item. Look for the Silver Purity dropdown menu and choose one of the options such as:

  • Fine Silver (99.9%)
  • Sterling Silver (92.5%)
  • Coin Silver (90%)
  • European Silver (80%)

The selected purity will affect the calculation of both the weight of pure silver and the melt value. This field is required.

Step 4: Enter Silver Spot Price

Enter the current market price of silver per troy ounce in the Silver Spot Price (USD per troy oz) field. Input a number greater than 0.01. This price reflects the current trading value of silver and is necessary for calculating the melt value.

Step 5: View Results

Once all the required fields are filled, the calculator will automatically compute the results:

  • Pure Silver Weight (troy oz): The weight of the pure silver content expressed in troy ounces, calculated using the formula: (silverWeight * weightUnit * silverPurity) / 31.1035. This result is displayed with an accuracy of three decimal places.
  • Melt Value: The estimated market value of the silver item, calculated with the formula: pureWeight * spotPrice, and formatted as a currency in USD with two decimal places.
  • Purity Percentage: Displays the percentage purity of the silver, simply multiplying the purity value by 100 and shown with one decimal place.

By following these steps, you can efficiently utilize the Silver Melt Calculator to determine the melt value of silver items quickly and accurately.
