The Tank Gallon Calculator helps you determine the volume characteristics of your tank. Follow these steps to use the calculator effectively.

Step 1: Provide Tank Dimensions

  • Tank Length: Enter the length of your tank in inches. Make sure the value is a non-negative number, and it can include decimal increments of 0.25 inches.
  • Tank Width: Enter the width of your tank in inches. Like the length, make sure this value is non-negative with increments of 0.25 inches.
  • Tank Height: Provide the height of the tank in inches using similar decimal conditions.

Step 2: Specify Tank Shape

Select the shape that best describes your tank:

  • Rectangle/Square: Choose this for a standard rectangular or square shaped tank. In the calculator, this is represented with a value of 1.
  • Bow Front: Select this for tanks with a curved front. This uses a value of 0.8.
  • Cylinder: For cylindrical tanks, this option is available and represented by a value of 0.785 in the calculator.

Step 3: Enter Substrate Depth (Optional)

If your tank includes substrate, enter the depth in inches. This value is not mandatory, but it helps calculate the actual water volume. Ensure the depth is a non-negative number, using increments of 0.25 inches if needed.

Step 4: Review Calculated Results

Once you have entered all relevant inputs, the calculator will display the following results:

  • Total Tank Volume: This shows the entire volume of the tank based on the dimensions and shape selected, presented in gallons.
  • Substrate Volume: If substrate depth is provided, this measures the volume the substrate occupies, also in gallons.
  • Actual Water Volume: This calculates the volume of water your tank can actually hold, deducting substrate volume from the total volume.
  • Water Volume in Liters: For convenience, the calculator converts the water volume from gallons to liters.
