Step-by-Step Guide to Using the VA Disability Rating Calculator

The VA Disability Rating Calculator can help you understand the combined disability rating and compensation you may receive based on your conditions and dependency status. Follow these steps to use the calculator effectively:

Step 1: Enter Disability Ratings

Begin by entering your disability ratings in the provided input fields. The calculator allows for up to three disability ratings. These ratings should be entered as percentages and typically range from 10% to 100% in increments of 10. Here’s how to input the ratings:

  • Disability Rating 1 (%): This field is required. Enter your first disability rating. Ensure that this percentage is between 0 and 100 and follows the step value of 10.
  • Disability Rating 2 (%): This field is optional. You can enter a secondary disability rating if applicable, adhering to the same entry rules.
  • Disability Rating 3 (%): This is another optional field for a third disability rating, following the same validation rules.

Step 2: Select Dependency Status

Next, specify your dependency status in the provided dropdown menu. This selection is required to calculate the appropriate compensation amount:

  • Veteran Only: Select this option if you have no dependents.
  • Veteran with Spouse: Choose this if you have a spouse.
  • Veteran with Spouse and Child: Select if you have both a spouse and a child.
  • Veteran with Child Only: Use this if you have one or more children but no spouse.

Step 3: Input Number of Dependent Children

If you have dependent children, indicate the number in the ‘Number of Dependent Children’ field. This step is optional and you can enter a number ranging from 0 to 10.

Step 4: Calculate Results

Once all necessary information is entered, the calculator will provide you with:

  • Combined Disability Rating: Using the formula 100 * (1 - (1 - rating1/100) * (1 - rating2/100) * (1 - rating3/100)), the calculator determines your combined rating percentage. This value is displayed without decimals.
  • Monthly Compensation: Depending on your combined rating, the calculator assesses your monthly compensation using a tiered logic model.
  • Yearly Compensation: This is automatically calculated as twelve times the monthly compensation, providing your projected annual benefit.

Review these results to gain insights into the compensation you might expect. The figures are presented in US dollars with two decimal places.
